Brazilian volleyball legend Leila Barros returned to Manila after 21 years, calling it the “right time” to celebrate the rise of Filipino volleyball at the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship.
Brazilian volleyball icon Leila Barros is back in the Philippines after 21 years—and she says there could not have been a better time.
Barros, a guest of honor for the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship, said she wanted to celebrate the country’s historic hosting and recognized the work behind it.
“In fact, for years, I’ve been receiving invitations to come to the Philippines then the longing really hit,” Barros shared.
“I thought it was the right time to come to the Philippines, because I believe this is the moment when Philippines volleyball is growing.”

Historic moment
The now-Brazilian senator praised the collaboration between the FIVB, Volleyball World, and the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) for staging the prestigious tournament, which is now down to the championship weekend.

Barros noted how significant it felt to be part of such a milestone.
“We have Brazilians working here, in this great championship, and I want to congratulate the International Federation and the Philippine Federation,” she said.
“I came to celebrate this historic moment together with the Filipino people.”
Same love
Barros, who first captured Filipino hearts during the 2000 FIVB World Grand Prix, admitted she felt the same warmth from fans even after more than two decades later.
The lefty opposite hitter also competed in the 2004 Samsung FIVB World Grand Prix at the Philsports Arena, cementing her status as a crowd favorite.
Since arriving in Manila on Friday afternoon, Barros already met with some of her fans, who brought her gifts and memorabilia.
“I honestly feel very happy and very comfortable. I already had the opportunity to be with some of my fans, and 25 years ago, they were already going to the hotel,” Barros said.
“Honestly, I am very happy just to be in the gym with all of you.”
Barros will be in the country until Sunday, where she is expected to grace the semifinals and Finals of the World Championship.
