Volleyball icon Leila Barros is set for an emotional homecoming to Manila, 25 years since she first won the hearts of Filipinos during the 2000 FIVB Grand Prix.

Barros, a three-time Olympian and now a senator in Brazil, confirmed her attendance as guest of honor at the finals of the 2025 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship on September 28 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

“What a joy it will be to reconnect with these passionate volleyball fans,” Barros wrote in her Instagram post.

“It is with a heart full of gratitude that I receive this very special invitation. Returning to the Philippines, where I have always been welcomed with such warmth, is incredibly exciting.”

At 53, Barros continues to inspire not just as a former volleyball star, but as a public servant. As chair of the Sports Committee in the Brazilian Senate, she champions sports development, women’s protection, and environmental sustainability.

She has authored landmark legislation, including the Anti-Stalking Law and Brazil’s General Sports Law.

PNVF president Ramon “Tats” Suzara called her return a “gift” to millions of Filipino fans, noting how Barros’ charisma and impact during her 2000 Manila appearance left a lasting mark.

“She captured the hearts of many Filipinos during her 2000 visit. Now, Leila Barros returns not only to wow the fans but also to inspire them as a distinguished public role model,” Suzara said.

The 2025 World Championship, set from September 12 to 28 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and Mall of Asia Arena, will feature 32 of the world’s best men’s teams, marking the biggest edition in tournament history.
