University of Santo Tomas super rookie Angge Poyos continues to rewrite UAAP women’s volleyball history, resetting another scoring record for first-year players before the elimination round of the Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament concludes.

Poyos secured the highest point total for a rookie, reaching 268 points after finishing with 25 markers in the Golden Tigresses’ dominant sweep of the University of the East last April 21.

The 5-foot-7 outside hitter surpassed the previous record set by former Ateneo standout Faith Nisperos, who scored 267 points in Season 84 back in 2022.

Poyos achieved this latest milestone before the Final Four despite sitting out one game and playing limited minutes in another due to illness.

“Hindi ko expect na umabot pala ako sa ganung points, pero happy ako na nagkaroon ako ng record and hindi pa naman tapos so need ko pang mag-peform sa mga susunod na laban,” Poyos told reporters after the match.

Poyos is now also in phenomenal company, joining Alyssa Valdez as an outside hitter with 240+ points on at least 40.0% efficiency in spiking.

Back in Season 78, Valdez had 243 points on 41.9% spiking efficiency. Before the UE game, Poyos already had 243 points on 40.8% spiking efficiency.

When asked about setting another UAAP record along with the Phenom, Poyos couldn’t help but idolize the Creamline Cool Smashers star.

“Happy nga kasi record ulit and idol ko naman si ate Alyssa so siguro isa din sa inspirasyon ko din,” said Poyos.

Before these new scoring feats, Poyos had also set the UAAP scoring record in a single game by a rookie with 31 points against Adamson last April 3.

But even with the historic season she’s had so far, the Bohol native remains humble and focused on the ultimate goal of UST—to bring home the UAAP crown.

“Para sa akin, overwhelming kasi nga as a rookie nagagawa ko 'yung mga ganung record and ayun nga, sa sarili ko, I will always keep my feet firm on the ground,” said Poyos.

With just one game left in the elimination round, the Golden Tigresses will look to secure the twice-to-beat bonus as they face De La Salle University on Saturday, April 27 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao at 6:00 p.m.

“Siyempre malaking motivation lalo na ngayon na nakabalik na ako kasi nagka-dehydration nga ako nung last time, so 100% ulit ngayon so ready ulit ako na paghahandaan namin 'yung La Salle,” said Poyos.
