Gilas veteran Dwight Ramos knows how big of an impact Quentin Millora-Brown can be to Gilas Pilipinas while Kai Sotto continues to recover from injury.
Gilas Pilipinas will be able to implement a next man up mentality once Quentin Millora-Brown joins the fray after FIBA recently deemed him eligible to play as a local for the national team.
The news came after Gilas wrapped up its campaign at the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 in Saudi Arabia.
With Kai Sotto still recovering from injury, the loss of height was apparent in Gilas’ games against bigger opponents in the Asia Cup — especially when they were up against Oceania foes New Zealand and Australia in key matchups.
But with Millora-Brown’s addition, Gilas veteran Dwight Ramos believes that Sotto can take his time in making sure he gets back to his full strength.
“I’m not sure however [Kai’s] recovery is but, if [he’s not returning by] November, it’s alright. As long as he’s there like [in February], that’s when we play New Zealand and Australia so we’re gonna need him then,” he said.
Having been through different iterations of the Gilas team since 2021, Ramos is ecstatic to welcome Millora-Brown to the fold as well. Especially as a fellow Filipino-American, Ramos spoke about the pride that donning the national colors brought about.
“That’s big time. I’m happy for him,” Ramos said at the sidelines of the PVL on Tour Finals.
“You know, it’s an honor to play for Gilas and I’m sure he’s gonna take that with pride and when he joins, I’m glad to invite him to the team,” he added.
In the meantime, before Gilas returns to action in the World Cup qualifiers later this year, Ramos will be going back to Japan for another season with the Levanga Hokkaido in the Japanese B.LEAGUE, where he has been playing since going professional.
For the upcoming season, Ramos will team up with a fellow national team standout as Keisei Tominaga signed with Hokkaido for the 2025-26 season.
