Gilas Pilipinas are getting timely reinforcements as they brace for battle in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Head coach Tim Cone expressed optimism about Calvin Oftana’s return, saying the versatile forward has looked sharp in training since joining the squad.

Oftana had been dealing with a double ankle sprain, which he suffered in the semifinals and Finals of the recently concluded PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup.

“He looks really good. He looks spritely, he’s jumping well, he’s moving well. He’s moving really well,” Cone said in an interview with Carlo Paminutan. “We’re pleased to have him. We need that guy who’s a lights-out shooter that other teams have to worry about. That helps spread the floor for Justin and June Mar.”

Oftana’s shooting and athleticism will be crucial for Gilas as it faces tough competition in Jeddah, allowing more space for naturalized star Justin Brownlee and the interior presence of Fajardo—if the eight-time PBA MVP is cleared to play.

Cone, however, admitted there are still concerns about Fajardo’s readiness.

“Our concern right now is June Mar. He hasn’t really been able to get into practice yet,” Cone shared. “We’re not sure how much he’s going to be able to contribute, but just his presence here, just walking in the court, already instills fear in the other teams. It’s really important that he’s here.”

Gilas arrived in Saudi Arabia on Thursday to acclimate to the conditions and maximize preparation time before its scheduled matches.

First up for the national team will be Chinese Taipei on August 6 at 2:00 a.m. Manila time, followed by Australia on August 7, and Iraq on August 9.
