Alas Pilipinas head coach Jorge De Brito called the trio of Angel Canino, Bella Belen, and Shaina Nitura part of a “new era” for Philippine volleyball.
Three big names will banner the Alas Pilipinas Women’s team ahead of the 2025 AVC Women’s Volleyball Nations Cup.
Head coach Jorge Souza de Brito emphasized the significance of Angel Canino, Bella Belen, and Shaina Nitura on the international stage, calling it a major step in the growth of Philippine volleyball.
While all three have been standout performers in the UAAP, De Brito was quick to highlight the difference in level and intensity in the international scene.
“The tournament they played—the UAAP—yes, they were Rookie of the Years and MVPs, but the international level is really different,” De Brito told One Sports. “My expectation for them is, if they keep on performing like they have been, it will be amazing.”
The Brazilian tactician added that the value of Canino, Belen, and Nitura goes beyond stats. Getting the experience of playing in international tournaments at a young age, the trio represents continuity and potential for the long-term development of the national team.
“You have to consider that it's a new era for them," De Brito explained. "They are part of this growth right now from our Philippine national team. Just expect that when they’re together, it’s going to be something really good to watch and work with.”
As Alas Women heads into the Nations Cup, De Brito downplayed talk of immediate medal expectations, instead urging his squad to approach the tournament like they did last year.
“We just had a talk about this, but not talking about these goals to be on the semifinals, but to enjoy day by day, game after game, because that's what we did last year."
The national team opens its campaign against Mongolia on June 7, with matches against Indonesia, Iran, New Zealand, and powerhouse Kazakhstan to follow.
“Our main target right now is Mongolia. Then we think about the next match,” said De Brito. “Of course, I think the fans deserve to have expectations. We need to work here to meet the expectations for each and every one."
"We also know this is a hard competition—no one comes here to lose," he added.
