Juami Tiongson, Marcio Lassiter and Jeron Teng sat out as San Miguel squared off with Blackwater in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup on Sunday, May 28.

The three players suffer from sore eyes, causing them to miss the game. Still, that did not stop the Beermen from coasting to a 115-78 victory over the Bossing.

“Right after ng game namin sa Montalban (against Terrafirma last May 18), the next practice, Jeron told us he cannot practice because of virus: sore eyes,” said Austria.

“After two days, sumunod si Juami. After two days, si Lassiter naman.”

But Austria was not exactly worried after his wards went down with the virus one after another.

After all, SMB has the luxury of a stacked lineup that boasts of the likes of June Mar Fajardo, Cjay Perez and Don Trollano.

“I think the players are ready. As I said before, every player can be a starter in our team,” Austria added.

Everything starts with their preparation in practice.

“What we’re trying to do is healthy competition. You have to dislodge the starter for you to become a starter, because sometimes, for me, being a starter is a big deal for the players,” said the nine-time PBA champion head coach.

“But they have to earn it. That’s what’s happening. Nagkakaroon ng healthy competition.”
