Keeping it real: Why LA Tenorio thinks Calvin Abueva is most overrated PBA player

Podcasts have been a rich source of hot takes, which fans can argue over online or face-to-face with a case of Red Horse on the side.

Who’s your GOAT? Who’s the hardest guy to defend? Who’s the worst coach? Those types of questions undeniably make for consumable content.

In its latest episode uploaded on Saturday, ClutchPoints Philippines’ Let it Fly podcast unloaded a good one on its special guest, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel legend LA Tenorio.

“Who’s the most overrated player in the PBA,” host Sol Mercado asked.

After several minutes of heavy deliberation, Tenorio came up with an answer.

“I’ll probably go with Calvin (Abueva),” the decorated floor general responded.

His explanation was quite sobering rather than scathing.

“Because he's had a lot of distractions. He could’ve been more. He could’ve won a lot of MVPs. So, for me, now he’s overrated,” Tenorio elaborated.

To be clear, Tinyente thinks highly of Abueva as a basketball talent. It’s just that in his eyes, the 35-year-old forward of the Magnolia Hotshots has underachieved, which by default made him an overrated player back when he was still a top prospect.

“He was highly recommended after his college days. He was really The Beast,” Tenorio reiterated.

Coming out of the San Sebastian Stags, Abueva took the PBA by storm in 2013. He even beat out seven-time MVP June Mar Fajardo for the Rookie of the Year trophy. Like Tenorio, he has suited up for Gilas Pilipinas.

Over the years, however, controversy has hounded Abueva. He even faced an indefinite ban for a violent clothesline on TNT KaTropa import Terrence Jones and dancing at the scorer’s table afterward.

Right now, Tenorio is probably proud of Abueva, who seemed to have cleaned up his act. The Beast has yet to see action in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup due to an injury.

Ginebra and Magnolia will face off tonight for Manila Clasico.

Catch it live at 6 p.m. on A2Z, PBA Rush, and the Pilipinas Live app.
