Save the date as two of boxing's biggest stars finally collide.
Two in-their-prime marquee stars actually fighting each other has become a rarity in boxing these days. But it will happen on April 23 (April 22 in the U.S.) when Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia finally collide in Las Vegas.
Yes, the Davis-Garcia super fight is now officially official, with the two unbeaten fighters announcing it themselves on their respective Twitter accounts.
Garcia spiced up his announcement by including what is likely a Photoshopped fight poster:
Davis, on the other hand, was more succinct:
Various sports outlets, including One Sports, previously reported that the two would be fighting on April 16 (April 15 in the U.S.). That initial fight date, however, was moved back by a week to allow for more time in promoting what could very well be an explosive, action-packed showdown with potential championship implications for both fighters.
Among the nitty-gritty ironed out by the Davis and Garcia camps to finally finalize the fight are the rematch clause and lead promotional duties. For the former, only Davis can activate a rematch in case of a loss. For the latter, on the other hand, Showtime PPV gets first dibs as lead promoter while Golden Boy Promotions will be lead promoter in case of a rematch. With those details resolved, it was all systems go for this much-hyped super fight.
The super fight pitting two of boxing’s biggest names will be contested at a 136-pound catch weight as initially reported, which means Tank’s World Boxing Association (Regular) lightweight belt will not be on the line. Regardless, Davis-Garcia is arguably one of the biggest fights to be made in boxing, if not the biggest outside Errol Spence Jr. vs Terence Crawford for the undisputed welterweight titles. After all, both Davis and Garcia are studs—fast, talented, in their primes, and with concussive power. Both are also unbeaten, highly entertaining, and charismatic with huge fan bases.
