LIVE UPDATES: Canada, Japan clash in Pool G after contrasting openers in World Championship

Canada will be looking for back-to-back wins as Japan aims to recover from a shock opening day loss as Pool G action continues in the 2025 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Monday afternoon.

 

Canada are coming off of a big victory over Libya when they swept their opening match on Saturday, with their eyes set on keeping themselves at pace to win the group.

 

Sharone Vernon-Evans will build off of his 22-point outing vs Libya.

 

 

Meanwhile, Japan, who got the rug pulled from under them in their first match against Turkiye, hope for better results after being swept against a sizeable crowd that rallied behind them at the Big Dome.

Fan favorite Ran Takahashi eyes a bounce back performance after only four points in their opening match of the tournament.

-Isaac Heslinga's soft touch finds a hole in Japan's defense, opening the second set with a one-point lead, 3-2.

-Canada ties the game, 5-5, from a block by Fynnian McCarthy.

-Japan widens lead to three, 10-7, off a service ace from Yuki Ishikawa.

-Nicholas Hoag ties the game again for Canada, 10-10.

-Canada on a 4-1 run off a kill from Daenan Gyimah, 14-11.

-Taishi Onodera keeping Japan in striking distance after a kill, 14-16.

-SHO extends lead for Canada, 20-15.

-Takahashi fires back for Japan, 18-22.

-Canada takes the second set, 25-23, after a service error from Takahashi. Canada is now up two sets.

-Hoag gives Canada the lead at the start of the third set, 3-2.

-Miyaura scores off the block, ties the game for Japan, 10-10.

-Heslinga gives Canada a one-point lead from an off-the-block hit, 13-12.

-Canada trying to break away after a Hoag kill, 16-14.

-Canada extends their lead to five after an error from Japan's Masato Kai, 20-15.

-Canada calls timeout, still leads the third set, 21-18.

-Tatsunori Otsuka brings Japan within one, 21-22. Canada calls timeout.

-Vernon-Evans scores off the block to finish the third set for Canada, 25-22.

-Canada wins against Japan, 25-20, 25-23, 25-22. Canada advances to the Round of 16, while Japan is eliminated from the World Championship.
