The Philippine women’s national football team is just a few days away from making its historic debut in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

And throughout the Filipinas' journey to history, it hasn’t been just about honing their skills and preparing to face some of the top football nations in the world. It has also become a time for many of the players to reconnect with their Filipino roots.

The opportunity to represent the Philippines has allowed Sofia Harrison, for instance, to reconnect with the country’s cultural heritage.

“It’s very rewarding to see my relatives supporting us, supporting the flag. I do it for them,” Harrison told The South Morning China Post. “Being part of this team has definitely allowed me to grow more and to just learn more about my culture and heritage.”

Harrison, who was born and raised in the United States, started representing the country back in the 2018 AFF Women's Championship.

Since then, the 24-year-old left back, who got an emotional message after her inclusion to the Filipinas' FIFA Women's World Cup lineup, has been a vital piece for the national team.

But for Harrison, she’s not just wearing the Philippine jersey for herself, but also for her Filipina mother.

“My mother was born in the Philippines, and she moved to America when she was very young,” said Harrison. “To be able to represent my mother’s side is very special.”

“When I was younger, I never thought that any of this would be possible, so to be able to actually be here for this, it’s very overwhelming,” she added.

It will be an historic day for the Philippines come July 21 as Harrison and the rest of the Filipinas begin their FIFA Women's World Cup campaign.

And best believe every single Filipina will be mighty proud to represent the Philippines in the beautiful game's premier tournament.
