The UP Fighting Maroons delivered a powerful statement with a 75-47 victory over the Ateneo Blue Eagles in UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball on Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
UP’s 28-point win marked the largest defeat for Ateneo in the Tab Baldwin era, per UAAP statistician Pong Ducanes.
Former Ateneo High School standout Francis Lopez led the charge, scoring 20 points on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting, along with five rebounds.
The Fighting Maroons seized control with a 15-0 run in the third quarter, leaving Ateneo scoreless for nearly half the frame.
Already securing a Final Four spot, UP improved to a league-leading 9-1. Meanwhile, Ateneo, now with a 3-8 record after four consecutive losses, faces a steep climb to keep its Final Four hopes alive.
