In a field of runners dressed for speed and comfort, one figure at the AIA Rock ’n’ Roll Running Series Manila drew the kind of attention that didn’t need a race bib to stand out.

Helmet on, jacket zipped, boots laced tight—US firefighter Anthony Locks took the 10km course wearing his full gear that weighed 28 kilograms, turning Manila’s streets into a moving memorial for fallen heroes.

Locks, a firefighter from San Francisco, has made this ritual part of his race story across the world.

Each run is anchored in remembrance, honoring the 343 New York firefighters who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks—a number etched into his steps with every heavy stride.

“My full gear is 28 kilo. I ran 10km with my full gear,” he said matter-of-factly after crossing the finish.

“It’s very heavy, but it’s for a good cause—for the 9/11,” he said to One Sports.

As an ambassador for the Rock ’n’ Roll Running Series USA, Locks is no stranger to long races or tough conditions.

But Manila, he admitted, carried a different kind of weight—one balanced by warmth.

“I am very amazed. I got very good hospitality from the Philippine people. Many picture, many smiles. I am very happy running today with Filipinos. Salamat po!”

While the gear never got lighter, the welcome did.

Smiles along Roxas Boulevard, pats on the back near the finish chute became part of the rhythm pushing him forward.

Amid the music, crowds, and energy of the race, his run stood out as a testament to endurance and commitment.
