‘Hopefully a woman can be the last man standing this year,’ says Regine Diego on upcoming PVL season

‘Hopefully a woman can be the last man standing this year,’ says Regine Diego on upcoming PVL season

Being the lone female head coach in the Premier Volleyball League, the pressure is inevitable for Regine Diego. Aside from that, she is leading an F2 squad that seeks to make its first podium finish in the league.

But for Diego, it’s not just about winning titles.

“I’m very glad to be the first, and hopefully not the last [female head coach], I hope to be the spark of empowering women,” said Diego during the PVL All-Filipino Conference press conference on Saturday.

Diego acknowledges that she now has a bigger responsibility after being the woman who broke the barriers and made history.

“I don’t want to be the start, I want to be the spark,” said the de La Salle alum. “But siyempre it’s also very pressuring, it’s also very hard for me rin kasi I have to make a good example to all the women who are supporting Philippine volleyball.”

The newly-minted F2 head coach is no stranger to winning with the past teams she mentored. During her time with the Nazareth School of National University, Diego led the team to a sweep of the UAAP Season 82 girls’ volleyball tournament. She also coached the Under-17 and Under-19 Philippine girls' national team.

With that winning pedigree, it cannot be helped if fans expect the Cargo Movers to bring home a championship. Diego, ever the winner, embraces the challenge.

“Hopefully a woman can be the last man standing for this year."
