Up-and-coming gymnast Eldrew Yulo qualified for his second final at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Baku after clinching a spot in the medal rounds of the horizontal bar on Friday, March 6.
Yulo, who had already qualified to the final of his pet event floor exercise, finished sixth in qualification after scoring 13.533.
The younger brother of two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo is competing in his first competition in the senior level, and has been showing tremendous promise with two shots at a medal in Azerbaijan.
During the qualification, Yulo performed a routine that had a lower difficulty score than most of his competitors (4.9). However, he executed it well to gain an execution score of 8.663 to make up the difference.
Top qualifier Chia-Hung Tang was given a score of 6.0 in difficulty, while garnering an execution score of 8.800 for a total of 14.800.
Yulo won bronze in horizontal bar in the FIG Artistic Gymnastics Junior World Championships held in Manila last year.
Meanwhile, Yulo missed out on the final of vault, another one of his pet events.
He finished 11th among 18 competitors. He was named a reserve for the final round.
Yulo competes in the floor exercise final on Saturday, March 7, before wrapping up his campaign with the high bar final on Sunday, March 8.
Yulo's older brother Carlos is a five-time gold medalist in the World Cup series.
