The Philippines stunned Japan in a dramatic double-overtime thriller at the Asia-Pacific Men’s Lacrosse Championship to advance to the semis and clinch a spot in the 2027 World Lacrosse Men’s Championship.
The Philippine men's lacrosse team pulled off one of its biggest wins in recent history, outlasting Japan in double overtime, 10-9, to book a semifinals spot in the 2026 Asia-Pacific Men’s Lacrosse Championship as well as qualification for the 2027 World Lacrosse Men’s Championship in Japan.
Down 4–7 at halftime, the Nationals mounted a furious second-half rally to erase the deficit and force overtime before sealing the win in the second extra period, capping a comeback that showcased both resilience and depth under pressure.
Japan stormed to an early advantage, racing to a 3–0 lead before the Philippines found its footing late in the first half behind goals from Jonathan Dugenio and Benjamin Palli. Still, Japan entered the break with a three-goal cushion after extending the margin to 7–4.
The tide turned in the third quarter as PHI found its offensive rhythm. Jonathan Dugenio sparked the surge, while Benjamin Palli and Jayden Basalatan helped chip away until the Philippines finally drew level at 7–7.
Basalatan then gave PHI its first lead at 8–7, and Jarrett Dugenio made it 9–7 as momentum swung firmly to the Filipinos.
Japan, however, refused to fold, clawing back with late goals to force a 9–9 deadlock at the end of regulation.
The tense battle spilled into overtime, where both sides traded stops until Nicholas Marsh delivered the decisive strike at 75:03, sending the Philippine bench into celebration.
The victory sends the Philippines to the semifinals and marks the country’s third qualification for the World Lacrosse Men’s Championship, set to be hosted by Japan in 2027.
The Philippines qualified twice before, making this latest berth another milestone for the growing program.
The result also capped a strong pool-stage run for the Filipinos, who entered the final day of play unbeaten at 2–0, having opened the tournament with a dominant win over China before edging Hong Kong in a narrow victory.
With a semifinal spot secured and a world championship ticket in hand, the Philippines now turns its focus to closing out the Asia-Pacific Championship on a high as they await the winner between Hong Kong and New Zealand in the play-ins.
