Carlos Yulo is once again a world champion, regaining the title in vault after a tremendous performance in the final of the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships at Jakarta, Indonesia on Saturday afternoon.

Yulo, who is also the reigning Olympic champion in vault, nipped Armenia’s Artur Davtyan for top honors thanks to a tremendous first vault where he scored 15.200. He then followed it up with a 14.533 in his second vault for a 14.866 average.

It was a strong start for Yulo as his first vault scored a 9.500 in execution, considering the degree of difficulty (5.600).

The difficulty of Yulo’s first vault was crucial as Davtyan scored better in his execution of his second vault, 9.566. However, he attempted a vault that only had 5.200 difficulty.

He eventually finished with an average of 14.833.

Yulo waited in bated breath for the final result of his performance after his Armenian rival performed last.

Fortunately for Yulo, who now has three gold medals in the World Championships, his risk in attempting a more difficult vault paid off.

Ukraine’s Nazar Chepurnyi rounded up the podium as he finished with the bronze with an average of 14.483.

Yulo’s gold thus sweetens his own haul after a bronze medal finish in floor exercise earlier this week.
