Alex Eala suffered early exits in both singles and doubles at the 2025 Birmingham Open, continuing a challenging stretch on the WTA tour following her Miami Open success.
Filipino tennis star Alex Eala faced another tough week on the WTA tour, suffering first-round exits in both the singles and doubles events at the 2025 Lexus Birmingham Open.
Eala, the tournament’s third seed in singles, endured a grueling three-set battle against Czech Republic's Linda Fruhvirtová in the opening round.
After nearly three hours of play, the 20-year-old Filipina fell short, 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-1, in a tightly contested encounter that saw momentum shift dramatically in the third set.
Fruhvirtová, currently ranked no. 152 in the world, broke away early in the final frame, racing to a 4-1 lead before closing out the match and handing Eala her third straight early-round singles loss in the European swing.
Earlier in the week, Eala and Swiss partner Rebeka Masarova also bowed out of the doubles competition, falling to the experienced Australian pair of Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez, 6-4, 6-4.
This marks another difficult stretch for the world no. 73 Eala, who also exited in the first round of the French Open singles and the second round of the doubles draw at Roland Garros just last week.
