Alex Eala’s grass-court campaign began on a tough note as she and partner Rebeka Masarova fell to the seasoned duo of Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez, 6-4, 6-4, in the Round of 16 of the Lexus Birmingham Open.

The Filipino-Swiss tandem kept things competitive throughout but couldn’t break through against the second-seeded Australian pair in the WTA 125 event.

It marks an early exit in doubles for Eala, who now shifts her focus to the singles draw, where she is seeded third.

The 20-year-old world no. 73 will face Linda Fruhvirtova of the Czech Republic, also 20, and currently ranked no. 152.

Eala is looking to bounce back after dropping four spots in the WTA rankings following her first-round finish at Roland Garros, where she reached a career-high of no 69 before making her Grand Slam debut.
