Region IX nabbed two gold medals in a single afternoon as their bets in Secondary boys’ weightlifting got the job done.
Krys Celvin Martinez and Kirby Kent Alas-As made it a double celebration for Region IX as they nabbed gold medals in their respective divisions at the Palarong Pambansa Secondary boys’ 52kg and 56kg competitions on Tuesday afternoon in Ilocos Norte.

Martinez, for his part, emerged victorious in the 52kg competition among seven other competitors.
He out-battled second placer Kirk Abala of Region VII by lifting a total of 155kg, which he achieved after lifting 80kg in his third and final attempt in the clean and jerk.
Meanwhile, Abala lifted 85kg in his first attempt in the clean and jerk before failing to lift 88kg in his second and third attempts to finish with 153kg total, two kilograms behind Martinez’s output.
NCR’s Josephos Magadan was a distant third with a 140kg total.
Over at the 56kg competition, Alas-As topped five other competitors with a runaway performance where he lifted a total of 210kg.
His closest rival, Adonis Ramos of Region IV-A, lifted only 186kg. Third placer Jhonryl Adlawon was 60kgs clear of Alas-As’ total with 150kg.
