A new set of challengers will face Alex Eala and Renata Zarazúa in the first round of women’s doubles at Roland Garros.
Alex Eala and Renata Zarazúa will have to adjust as they absorb an opponent change ahead of their debut in the doubles tournament of Roland Garros, with their game scheduled late Tuesday evening, Manila time.
Initially slated to face Marta Kostyuk and Elena-Gabriela Ruse in their opening match, Eala and Zarazúa will face the duo of Emily Appleton and Yvonne Cavalle-Reimers. The latter is a familiar opponent for Eala.
The 20-year-old previously faced Cavalle-Reimers twice — including in her first-ever pro final in an ITF 15K tournament back in 2021, where Eala beat her in three sets, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
It gave Eala her first title as a professional, barely a year since joining the pro ranks.
Meanwhile, there haven’t been reports on the reason for the opponent change. However, Kostyuk did suffer an opening round loss in the singles tournament in Paris.
Kostyuk, seeded 26th in the tournament, fell flat against Czech qualifier Sara Bejlek, losing in straight sets, 3-6, 1-6.
Meanwhile, Ruse is getting ready for a second round singles match against Paula Badosa.
Badosa, for her part, is coming off of a statement win over Naomi Osaka as she emerged victorious in three sets, 6(1)-7, 6-1, 6-4.
Eala hopes to push on in women’s doubles after suffering an early exit in the singles tournament.
Earlier this week, Eala fell against Emiliana Arango in three sets, 0-6, 6-2, 3-6, and ended her first foray into Grand Slam singles quickly.
