Filipino-American skater Peter Groseclose fell short of securing a semifinals ticket to the 1,500m short track speed skating event of the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games on Saturday.

The 1,500m event was divided into six heats for the quarterfinals with six skaters each.

The best three athletes in each quarterfinal would qualify for the semis, along with the three fastest fourth placed competitors.

Groseclose was in the sixth and last quarterfinal.

Early in the race, the Filipino-American was keeping close to South Korea's Joo Jaehee. By the middle laps, Japan's Fuchigami Yuta maneuvered his way to second place, while Groseclose fell third.

Later in the race, Groseclose faded to the back as he finished fifth with a time of 2:20.575.

The slowdown at the latter laps cost the skier, as Belgium's Lowie Dekens, who finished fourth with a time of 2:18.473, snagged a spot in the semifinals as one of the three fastest fourth-placed athletes.

So even though Groseclose actually registered a faster time than some of the quarterfinal winners, he didn't make the cut.

Joo (2:16.239), Fuchigami (2:16.364), and Great Britain's Willem Murray (2:18.050) finished at the top of the sixth quarterfinal.

The Fil-Am though will have two more chances with the 1,000m race on Sunday, January 21, and the 500m race on Monday, January 22.
