The Petecio siblings are out to bring home the gold.
Nesthy is not the only Petecio who’s bringing pride to the country when it comes to boxing, as her brother Norlan is also slowly but surely making a name for himself as well.
The Petecio siblings are competing in the Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia, with both of them already advancing to the semifinals of their respective weight classes.
The female Petecio proved too much for Laos’ Minavanh Oupaxa in their women’s 57kg bout. Her younger brother, meanwhile, dominated his opponent in the men’s 67kg fight.
Having each other in Phnom Penh has been providing them a welcome extra boost, especially for the up-and-coming Norlan.
“Sabay kami kumain, sabay kami mag-jogging, mag-extra training. Nagtatanong siya kung ano dapat gawin niya, kung anong magandang gagawin niya sa kalaban niya,” the older Petecio told One Sports on Monday after her quarterfinals match.
While the Tokyo Olympics silver medalist acknowledged that her brother also has his respective coaches, getting advice from a family member is different.
“Siyempre iba din naman 'yun na kaming magkapatid ang nag-uusap sa ganun. So, ang sarap sa feeling na first time kami magkasama together at nag-uusap kami sa diskarte na gagawin,” said Nesthy.
But it's not just a one-way relationship, as Nesthy is also learning from her younger brother.
“Kahit ako, humihingi ako ng advice sa kanya,” said Petecio. “Aside sa magkapatid kami, alam ko magaling din siyang boksingero, so alam niya kung ano dapat gawin.”
All eyes will be on the Petecios as they look to bring home not just one, but two gold medals—one for each other.
