Cignal dominates Akari for strong start to PVL on Tour campaign

VIGAN, ILOCOS SUR — Cignal swept Akari 25-23, 25-14, 25-23 to kickstart its campaign with a bang in the first-ever PVL on Tour at the Chavit Coliseum here Sunday, June 22.

Even without stars Vanie Gandler and Dawn Catindig, the HD Spikers got a timely boost from their new recruits in Erika Santos and Tin Tiamzon, with the duo combining for 25 points.

Holding a 2-0 set edge, Cignal aimed to swiftly finish off Akari in the third set.

Staring at a 19-all count, the HD Spikers pummeled four straight points, two of which came from Santos, to build a 23-19 lead.

The Chargers, who were without Justine Jazareno, Fifi Sharma, Faith Nisperos and Erika Raagas, tried to mount a comeback behind Gretchel Soltones and Ivy Lacsina to threaten within 23-24.

However, a reception by Ethan Arce went over the net and dropped just in time to seal the victory for the HD Spikers.

Cignal quickly returns to the taraflex tomorrow, June 23, in the opening game of a double-header against Capital1 at 4 p.m.

The duel between Akari and Creamline follows in the mainer at 6 p.m.

Both matches will be held at the same venue.
