PVL: Eya Laure, Chery Tiggo stun Cignal, bolster semis bid with fourth straight win

Chery Tiggo gained crucial ground in the semis race of the 2024 PVL All-Filipino Conference after holding off Cignal, 26-24, 25-20, 26-24,at the PhilSports Arena on Thursday night.


The Crossovers rose to a 6-2 record for 17 points, while dragging the HD Spikers down to a 5-3 slate with 16 points. The result effectively had the two teams switching positions, with Chery Tiggo rising to fifth place and Cignal sliding down to sixth.


Tied at 23 in the decisive third, Roselyn Doria committed a costly net touch that pushed Chery Tiggo at match point. Ces Molina gave Cignal a lease on life with a cross-court kill, but EJ Laure nailed a cross-court hit of her own before Eya Laure slammed the door shut with an off-the-block hit.

 

The younger of the Laure sisters showed the way with 16 points built on 11 attacks, two blocks, and three aces, to go along with 13 excellent receptions. 


EJ also had an all-around outing, collecting 13 markers, 13 digs, and 11 receptions for Chery Tiggo, which also strung 11 points from Ara Galang. 


Alina Bicar churned out the offense for the Crossovers with 12 excellent sets. 

 

Meanwhile, Molina was the lone double-digit scorer for Cignal with 16 markers. She also tallied seven digs and five receptions in the deflating loss.


Jovelyn Gonzaga only managed eight points, while Riri Meneses and Vanie Gandler scored six apiece in the losing cause.


Chery Tiggo aims to continue its scorching streak when it collides with PLDT, while Cignal seeks to regain its footing when it faces Petro Gazz on April 16, Tuesday.


Both matches will be held at the same Pasig venue.
