There’s probably nothing worse than dragging yourself to work after the passing of a loved one.

But that’s exactly what Phoenix new boy JC Cullar did Wednesday night, June 4.

Fuel Masters head coach Jamike Jarin could not help but admire Cullar's professionalism as he suited up for the Fuel Masters in their 118-107 victory over NorthPort in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup.

Though advised to immediately catch his flight to Italy to be with his family in this trying time, the rookie opted to honor his obligation and played against the Batang Pier.

He instead headed to the airport after the match.

“Being a professional, sure he wanted to be with his family, but he said he wanted to be with his family also here,” said Jarin of Cullar, who clocked over seven minutes and made four points and four assists.

It’s what his dad would have wanted.

“I’m sure his dad wanted him to play. So he played,” Jarin said.

Phoenix ace Jason Perkins also shared his admiration for his teammate, recognizing how hard it must have been for him to play given his heartbreaking situation.

“It’s really hard to play after that happens with your family. He has a flight at 2 a.m., he still had the strength to come out and play. And he played well tonight,” said Phoenix ace Jason Perkins.

“And JC hasn’t been anything but positive and strong. I think that really inspired and motivated us today.”

Cullar's resolve was an inspiration for the also-ran Fuel Masters, who ended a four-game skid to improve to a 3-7 record.

“We dedicated the game to him, his family, and the soul of his father,” said Jarin.
