Richard Salaño and Christine Hallasgo made their mark as the Philippines’ top bets in the Sydney Marathon, both landing inside the top 40 of their respective divisions in the prestigious race held last Sunday, August 31.
Salaño clocked 2:26:48 to place 36th overall among 21,425 male runners and 16th out of 3,261 competitors in the 30–34 age group.
He was grateful for the opportunity, while jokingly lamenting the uphill challenges and the cost of marathon photos.
Running the grueling 42.195-kilometer course at an average pace of 3:28 per kilometer, the elite Filipino runner clocked his season best according to his World Athletics profile.
His performance improved on his 2:33:56 finish at the Manila Marathon earlier in August, where he placed second.

Ethiopia’s Hailemaryam Kiros Kebedew ruled the men’s race in 2:06:06 with a blistering pace of 2:59 per kilometer.

On the women’s side, Hallasgo also turned in an improved time. The former Southeast Asian Games gold medalist and reigning Manila Marathon women's champion crossed the finish line at 2:54:24, placing 39th overall out of 11,463 female runners.
She was also 10th among 1,628 competitors in her 30–34 age bracket.
She averaged 4:07 per kilometer, trimming more than a minute off her winning time of 2:55:34 in Manila.
Hallasgo couldn't help but go back after the race to enjoy the scene.
"'Yung nag-jogging lang, pero na-amaze sa ganda ng lugar, kaya after mag-jog, binalikan to take pictures," she posted.

Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands took the women’s crown with a time of 2:18:22 and a pace of 3:16 per kilometer.
