Cancer survivor Rina and her husband Ricardo Pile share how their kids and a shared commitment to health sparked their running journey—and they have an inspiring message for young runners ready to take their first stride.
In a world where wellness is often reduced to quick fixes and fads, longtime couple Ricardo and Rina Pile are living proof that a meaningful commitment to health—and to each other—can lead to real transformation.
The couple, aged 62 (Ricardo) and 55 (Rina), only began running together earlier this year.
“As a couple, January lang,” they shared during the Sante Barley Trilogy Run Asia - Leg 2.
Their running journey began not out of curiosity or competition, but from the quiet encouragement of their children.
“‘Yong anak namin,” they said simply, when asked who motivated them to start.
That spark of inspiration has since grown into a lifestyle they now wholeheartedly advocate for.
Rina, a stage one cervical cancer survivor, credits clean living and discipline for their progress and resilience.
“Fifty five ako (Rina), siya (Ricardo) sixty two. Cancer survivor ako. Cervical po, stage one,” she revealed.
More than personal growth, they run with a deeper intention: to inspire others, especially the youth, to prioritize their health.
“Sana maging encouragement din kami sa kanila ng good health. Lalo na sa panahon ngayon na napakaraming mga influence na bad vibes. Mas maganda sana kung dito sila mahilig sa pagtakbo. Kahit anong sports,” said Rina.
Their advice? Simple, grounded, and powerful: “Clean living lang kami. ‘Yon lang ang kailangan. Basta practice. ‘Wag kang uminom ng alak. ‘Wag manigarilyo, ‘yan ang importante.”
For young runners just beginning their journey, the Piles’ story is a reminder that it’s never too late to take that first step.
All it takes is love—for yourself, your family, and your future.
