The PGJC-Navy Sea Lions withstood the tough challenge of the Savouge Aesthetics Spin Doctors behind Joeven Dela Vega’s 27-point outburst to stretch their winning run to four in the 2024 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference.
Joeven Dela Vega and the PGJC-Navy Sea Lions avoided a collapse, turning back the Savouge Aesthetics Spin Doctors in five grueling sets, 27-25, 28-26, 22-25,16-25, 15-11, in the 2024 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference at the Paco Arena on Wednesday, April 10.
Dela Vega carried the cudgels with a game-high 27 points anchored on 24 attacks, two blocks, and an ace, lifting the Sea Lions to their fourth straight win in five outings for solo third place.
Holding a commanding two-set edge, PGJC-Navy struggled to close out the bout as the Spin Doctors leaned on the trio of Sherwin Caritativo, Jerremy Pedrosa, and Charlee Magpayoo to tip the scales to their favor.
Jolted to their senses after squandering the lead, the Sea Lions played with urgency in the decisive fifth frame, where they shattered a 4-all deadlock and surged to a 13-9 lead.
Lorenz Senoron tried to pump life into Savouge Aesthetics, but Dela Vega iced the game for good.
PGJC-Navy skipper Greg Dolor provided ample support with 17 markers, all coming from spikes, while Peter Quiel netted five of his team’s 11 blocks on his way to 13 points.
Omar Lioc pitched in a double-double effort of 11 points and 10 receptions, to go along with four digs, for the Sea Lions, who generated 13 excellent sets from Louie Pudadera.
The Spin Doctors, meanwhile, could not arrest their slide, spiraling down to a third consecutive loss for a 1-3 slate.
Caritativo poured a double-double of 20 points and 20 receptions that went for naught, while Pedrosa and Magpayo had 17 and 12 markers, respectively, in a losing cause.
PGJC-Navy seeks to extend its surge to five when it takes on VNS-Nasty, while Savouge Aesthetics tries to snap out of its funk when it faces Philippine Air Force on Sunday, April 14.
Both matches will be held at the PhilSports Arena.
