Gilas Pilipinas Women succumbed to a huge 85-59 defeat to host Chinese Taipei in the 2025 William Jones Cup opener on Wednesday, July 2, at the Taipei Peace Basketball Stadium in Taiwan.

After keeping it close in the first half, the Gilas Women struggled to find their shot in the third as Chinese Taipei built an 18-point lead at 61-43 after Szu-Ching Peng’s layup.

The hosts continued to pile on the woes for the Philippine national team, building their biggest lead at 26 points after Chen Yen-yu’s inside basket.

Ella Fajardo and Sumayah Sugapong tried their best to mount a comeback, but Chinese Taipei simply had too much length and speed for the Filipinas.

Gilas Women were without Janine Pontejos, Afril Bernardino, and Jhack Cabinbin due to their military duties.

Up next for the Philippine squad will be Thailand tomorrow, July 3, at 4:00 p.m.

The Jones Cup serves as part of the build-up for the upcoming 2025 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup.
