The duo — dubbed "SiPons" — put up a valiant effort before absorbing a 13-21, 17-21 loss to Stefánia Flóra Kun and Lilla Villám of Hungary in their quarterfinal duel, Saturday, June 21 in Qidong, China.
Kun and Villám rode the momentum from a mid-set surge in the opener to secure the straight-set win and punch their ticket to the semifinals, where they will face either Japan’s Maho Yabumi and Mayu Kikuchi or Australia’s Caitlin Bettenay and Cassandra Dodd.
Earlier in the tournament, the decorated tandem advanced to the quarterfinals after sweeping Pool D with back-to-back wins.
The Alas Pilipinas duo scored straight-set victories over Japan’s Kana and Nayu Motomura, 21-17, 21-10, and China’s MeiMei Lin and Hong Xie, 21-14, 21-17.
Meanwhile, the pair of Sunny Villapando and Dij Rodriguez bowed out in the Round of 12 following a narrow 20-22, 18-21 loss to China’s Lvwen Yuan and Lingdi Zhu.
On the men’s side, Ronniel Rosales and Rancel Varga also saw their campaign end after a 19-21, 16-21 defeat to Australia’s Garang Anyang and Justin Schumann.
