University of the Philippines ended its 17-game losing streak after downing University of the East, 25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 25-17, in the UAAP Season 86 women's volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City on Sunday, March 17.

The Fighting Maroons, who were still without reigning Best Middle Blocker Niña Ytang, faltered in the third but denied the Lady Warriors of a possible comeback as they took the next frame en route to their first victory of the season.

They came up with the breakthrough against the very same team which they last won a match against on March 5 last year.

Tied at seven-all in the fourth set, UP went on a 5-0 run anchored on Steph Bustrillo and Joan Monares' emphatic attacks.

Bustrillo continued to power her way past the Lady Warriors' defense on her way to tallying 24 points on 22 attacks and two aces, including the game-clincher.

Irah Jaboneta and Joan Monares added 12 points apiece for the Fighting Maroons.

Pling Baclay also had a stellar outing for UP, especially on the defensive end with a season-high seven blocks.

The Fighting Maroons now hold a similar 1-6 card with their conquered foe to end the first round on a high note.

Casiey Dongallo poured 26 points built on 23 attacks, two blocks and one ace for UE in the losing effort.
