Rafi Reavis' playing time may have diminished over the years, but he still has an important role for Magnolia.

That is why Hotshots coach Chito Victolero fields in the 47-year-old cager from time to time, the latest in the squad's 127-98 quashing of Terrafirma in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup Sunday, May 4.

In a little over six minutes of play, the Magnolia beanpole contributed four points and three rebounds.

“I just tried to give him some minutes para in case we need him in the future,” said Victolero after the match at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

“Like what we did against San Miguel, we used him at least four, five minutes against June Mar.”

Victolero was referring to the Hotshots’ 98-95 come-from-behind overtime win over San Miguel last April 16.

Reavis only scored two points while trying to help tame eight-time Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo in almost four minutes of play.

But while that does not exactly scream significant on paper, it meant the world for starters like Ian Sangalang and Zavier Lucero who could get some much-needed breather from their task of guarding Fajardo.

Off the court, Reavis, who is playing in the PBA since 2002, still makes a difference.

“Ganoon naman si Rafi: very active on the bench, talking to his teammates, may mga suggestions,” said Victolero.

“He also told me about it. We’re very open sa players. Especially si Rafi, ang dami nang experiences niyan.”

Though he has spent most of his time on the bench infusing some wisdom and encouragement to his younger teammates, Reavis is ready whenever his number is called.

“Rafi is always ready,” said Victolero.
