BANGKOK — The Philippine women’s national football team will be fighting for the gold medal in the SEA Games 2025 in Thailand after they nipped the hosts in a thrilling penalty shootout, 1-1 (4-2) at Chonburi Stadium on Sunday night.
A late penalty in favor of the Philippines helped net the equalizer at the 87th minute, courtesy of Jael-Marie Guy to force the hosts to extra time.
After 30 minutes, the score was still level at 1-1 which set into motion the penalty shootout. The Filipinas made it a perfect 4-for-4 with skipper Hali Long providing the fourth make for the Filipinas, forcing the Thais’ hand after an earlier miss from Pluemjai Sontisawat.
Orapin Waennngoen then launched the ball way over the net to seal the Filipinas’ first-ever final in the SEA Games.
They arrange a rematch against Vietnam for the gold. The Filipinas beat Vietnam in pool play, 1-nil.
