Philippine tennis sensation Alex Eala continued to rise in the WTA rankings after her recent success in the WTA Tour, moving to a new career-high of world no. 70 in the latest update on Monday, May 5.

Eala, who is coming off of a restful week after pulling out of the Catalonia Open, will tangle in another WTA 1000 tournament at the Italian Open in the coming days.

The 19-year-old improved two more spots in the rankings after a year-end ranking of 143 in 2024. She was world no. 140 last March 17, the same week that she went on a semis run at the Miami Open.

Despite her quick rise to stardom, the Rafa Nadal Academy scholar has since been on a steady road amid greater expectations.

At the tail-end of April, Eala once again battled against world no. 2 Iga Swiatek at the Round of 64 of the Madrid Open. Regardless of the loss, the 19-year-old was able to hold her ground in a three-set defeat.

Interestingly, Eala might once again be in the near future of Swiatek as the Polish star is the reigning champion of the Italian Open.

Other familiar faces also await Eala in Rome with Miami opponents Jessica Pegula, and Madison Keys also among seeded players in the tournament.

The action in Rome is set to preface Eala’s first-ever appearance in a main draw of a Grand Slam as a professional at Roland Garros in Paris.
