This is only the beginning.
The Philippine women's national football team made history with a first-ever appearance at the FIFA Women's World Cup and a first-ever victory in the tournament.
The Filipinas' journey ended in the group stage. But for PLDT Inc. and MVP Sports Foundation (MVPSF) chairman Manny V. Pangilinan, the booters can go even further in the future.
"It’s a good start for the Filipinas. Keep it up! We hope to see more of you in succeeding World Cup tournaments," Pangilinan told the squad during a meeting.
Also present were PLDT and Smart Communications president and CEO Alfredo Panlilio, PLDT leadership transition officer Ricky Vargas, PLDT and Smart FVP and MVPSF executive director Jude Turcuato, and Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Mariano Araneta.
The Filipinas finished 24th out of the 32 squads in the competition, thanks to the win against co-host New Zealand, highlighted by Sarina Bolden's goal.
"We also would like to congratulate PFF for gathering these talented young women to represent the nation," Pangilinan added.
"On behalf of the federation, I would like to thank MVP, Mr. Panlilio, Mr. Vargas, and the whole organization who have been supporting the women’s national football team in our journey since we started almost a decade ago. Words cannot express our appreciation, and hopefully, we can achieve more with your support," said Araneta.
The MVPSF began supporting the country's women's football program in 2014, when the organization decided to invest in talent identification of heritage Filipinas playing in the United States.
The MVPSF has also been active in promoting football at the grassroots level.
With new Australian coach Mark Torcaso, the Filipinas will next train for the Asian Games in China, which will take place in September.
