The Filipino Flash is ready to make history.
The Filipino Flash Nonito Donaire is all set for his crossroads match on July 16 against Mexico’s Alexandro Santiago for the WBC bantamweight belt.
And, apparently, a motorcade is also being set for the 40-year-old four-division champion, who is aiming to make history as the first ever four-time bantamweight champion in history.
Sports analyst Quinito Henson first broke the news of the planned motorcade, which will reportedly take place a few days after Donaire returns to the Philippines. Henson, however, did not indicate whether the motorcade will push through only if Donaire cops the gold again, or if it will be held regardless of the fight’s result.
Nevertheless, Henson made it clear that The Filipino Flash is all set for his date with destiny in Las Vegas, having spent three months in the country to prepare for Santiago.
According to the veteran sports journalist, Donaire set up camp on local soil because he and his team found it difficult to find sparring partners who can approximate Santiago’s 5-foot-2 frame. He evidently got what he was looking for at the Omega Boxing Stable in Cebu City, where he was joined by Omega coach Julius Erving Junco and Christian Araneta, the no. 4 ranked light flyweight by the IBF.
Donaire is back in the US as of press time as he winds up his preparations for his latest title fight—his first after getting knocked out by Naoya Inoue in June 2022.
