Alas Pilipinas came close to stealing a set but ultimately fell short as they dropped their opening match to host Vietnam, 25–14, 30–28, 25–17, in the 2025 SEA V.League Leg 2 on Friday night at the Vinh Binh Gymnasium.

The Philippine squad had its best chance in the second frame, earning three set points but failing to convert.

Vietnam weathered the storm behind the steady play of Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen and Nguyen Thi Phuong, eventually closing out the extended set and taking full control of the match.

With momentum on their side, the Viets dominated early in the third set, leading by as many as seven points at 16-9.

Alas though managed to climb all the way back to tie the game at 19-all behind the efforts of Eya Laure, Angel Canino, and Maddie Madayag.

Still tied at 21-all, Vietnam would eventually pull away behind a 3-0 run to reach match point. Maddie Madayag would pull one back for the Philippines, however Vi Thi Nhu Quynh sealed the win with a combination play.

Despite the defeat, Shaina Nitura and Cla Loresco were among the bright spots for head coach Jorge de Brito.

Alas Women look to bounce back on Saturday, August 9, when it takes on defending champion Thailand at 8:00 p.m. (Manila time).
