Four-time PBA champion Greg Slaughter recently repped his hometown colors, playing for Cebu in the DAYO23 Invitational.
Greg Slaughter reconnected with his roots as he represented Cebu at the DAYO23 Tournament over the weekend, winning the championship in the men’s division at Barangay 830 in Manila.
Slaughter, who last played officially for the Manila SV Batang Sampaloc in the MPBL, was a reinforcement for Cebu team Chase Tower Runs who were defending champions in the tournament organized by Jordan Brand and Titan.
The five-time PBA All-Star beamed with pride at being able to play for his hometown, and said that it was always something that held a place in his heart.
“[It’s] really good. You know, Cebu’s always something very special to me,” Slaughter told One Sports.
“It’s my home in the Philippines and just to be able to play for a Cebu team, it really means a lot to me,” he added.
Joining him in the winning team was former UP guard and Suwon KT Sonicboom player JD Cagulangan, with the latter hitting the game-winner in the final match.
While Slaughter already has a lot of accolades in his career — including those during his tenure with the PBA — he believes there is still some gas left in the tank. At 37 years old, Slaughter continues to search for the next step in his career.
After a deal to once again play in the MPBL fell through, Slaughter said that he’s just picking his options at the moment.
“[I’m] still deciding on the best fit for me. You know, there’s a couple of teams that I’m interested in joining but just looking at the best situation for me,” he said.
“Right now, I’m just focusing on my two daughters, having fun with them, raising them, I think I’ll be back in basketball real soon.”
Before his stint in the MPBL, Slaughter also played in the Japan B.LEAGUE with the Rizing Zephyr Fukoka. Still, it has been quite a while since the two-time UAAP champion had a steady gig in basketball.
Despite everything, the former PBA no. 1 pick is eager to get back on his feet and play the game he loves.
“Yeah, yeah. [I plan to come back to pro basketball],” he said.
