Louder for the people in the boroughs!
New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu woke up today feeling dangerous.
The do-it-all guard has been having one heck of a season, helping the Liberty to the top seed in the East in the WNBA Playoffs after a 32-8 record in the regular season. They are looking to move past the Washington Mystics in the first round.
The Liberty have looked like they're a class of their own. With Ionescu, two-time Finals MVP Breanna Stewart, and Courtney Vandersloot spearheading the attack, they have made winning easy and fun, reinvigorating the always-critical Big Apple fanbase.
When asked about what's being perceived by many as a "depressing" current state of New York sports, the sweet-shooting Ionescu, who broke Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry's record earlier this year, didn't hold back.
"We'll be able to shut up those people on Twitter who have anything to say about what's been going on with New York sports. As far as I'm concerned, we've been playing the best basketball that's been played in New York City for a very long time," said the 25-year-old fireball in a video posted by SNY Liberty.
Here's your crown, Sabrina. You dropped it. Here's the mic too. You also dropped it.
Ionescu has always been confident about her abilities since her college days at Oregon. It's no wonder why the late great Kobe Bryant wanted to mentor her. She has brought that same mindset to the Liberty since being drafted as the first overall pick in 2020.
Her sharp claim could be seen as a subtle shot to the New York Knicks. Or the Brooklyn Nets. Or the New York Yankees. Or the New York Giants.
But there's also credence to what Ionescu said. While the Knicks have made the NBA Playoffs twice in the last three seasons, that's not really a big achievement. The same goes for the Nets, who were swept in the first round in back-to-back seasons. The Yankees and the New York Mets are both currently in the lower half of the standings in the MLB, while the Giants have only been to the NFL Playoffs twice in the last 11 seasons. Let's not even talk about the New York Jets.
So yeah, speak your truth, Sabrina!
Ionescu averaged 17.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.4 assists and shot 44.8% from long distance in the regular season.
