The Gilas Pilipinas Women once again could not sustain a strong start, taking to loss from the WUG CTUSF Training Squad, 76-57, in their last game of action in the William Jones Cup at the Taipei Heping Basketball Gymnasium in Taipei on Sunday.

Gilas Women, already out of contention of a podium finish, crashed out after they went cold from the field.

Despite finishing the first half ahead by two, 32-30, the Philippines faltered in the second half where they were outscored by their foes, 46-25, which spelled trouble for the Pat Aquino-mentored squad. The third quarter blew the game wide open for the Taiwanese team, outscoring Gilas, 20-11.

They then topped it off with a fourth quarter where they poured in the most points with 26 against Gilas’ 14.

Shooting percentage proved to be the difference for both teams as the Philippines struggled to get anything going. But the disparity was largest in 2-point field goals, with the Philippines shooting just 14-of-45 for 31.1 percent.

In contrast, the WUG CTUSF Training Squad made more than half of their shots from inside the line, going 22-of-41 for 53.7 percent.

Overall, the Philippine cagers shot a meager 30.4 percent from the field.

Vanessa de Jesus paced Gilas in the losing effort with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Naomi Panganiban added 10 markers.

Jack Animam had seven points and 11 rebounds as Gilas ended their stint with a 1-4 slate.

Up next for Gilas is the 2025 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup in Shenzhen, China later this month.
