Pido comeback? SMC takeover? Fans speculate about post-Bal David Tigers

Pido comeback? SMC takeover? Fans speculate about post-Bal David Tigers
UAAP | PBA

Bal David stepped down as head coach of the UST Growling Tigers after just one dismal season and fans have already speculated what comes next for the Espanya-based squad.

Immediately after news of David’s resignation went online, coach Pido Jarencio’s name popped out as an option for replacement.

Now this is not new to whoever follows the Tigers. Five different coaches have handled the UST men’s basketball program since Jarencio’s departure in 2013, and his comeback is consistently mentioned when the Tiger’s coaching position becomes vacant.

Technically, Jarencio will be able to coach the Tigers since he’s no longer coaching for NorthPort in the PBA. Jarencio took over the team manager position for the Batang Pier, switching roles with Bonnie Tan.

Now the rumor mill in Espanya doesn’t stop with Jarencio.

David’s exit have prompted other fans to think that the famed San Miguel Corporation will back up UST — just as they did for their Dominican brothers in Letran.

USTe could only hope that SMC would support their team because that could mean championships in the coming years.

Of course, all of these are just speculations. The only sure thing for UST right now is that their program has a huge void to fill.

One UST fan though hopes David's one forgetful season as the Tigers' coach won't blemish his legacy with the university. David is part of the famed UST four-peat in the 90s, winning back-to-back UAAP title in 1993 and 1994.

There will be remnant of David's staff with UST as the Varsitarian, UST’s official student publication, confirmed that assistant coach Rodney Santos will stay with the team despite David’s exit.
