The UP Fighting Maroons used a balanced team attack to nip the UE Lady Warriors to start the UAAP Season 88 women's volleyball tournament.
The UP Fighting Maroons flexed their form from the get-go, dropping the UE Lady Warriors in four sets, 25-12, 25-9, 21-25, 25-19, to start the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
UP transferee Casiey Dongallo was one of the biggest contributors to the win, finishing with 13 points against her former school. Three others finished in double-digit scoring for the Fighting Maroons.
Dongallo, who had played for UE in UAAP Season 86, returned to the league after serving her one-year residency with the Diliman-based team.
UP holdovers Irah Jaboneta and Niña Ytang also did some heavy lifting, finishing with 14 markers each to power UP to a 1-0 record.
The game also gave new UP head coach Fabio Menta a winning start to his career in the UAAP.
UP recovered well after dropping the third set, denying UE the momentum to close things out in four.
After trailing, 9-10, UP mounted a 5-1 run to take control and later secure the victory.
The Fighting Maroons extend UE’s losing skid to 15 games as the Lady Warriors went winless in UAAP Season 87.
