UST, the country’s pontifical university, is set to host the UAAP for the first time since 2017.
UST is hoping to share a piece of its identity with all UAAP member schools as they get ready to host Season 88 later this year, with the opening ceremonies expected to unfurl inside the school campus in España.
Serving as both a practical and symbolic solution, UST Athletic Director Gigi Kamus spoke about holding the opening ceremonies inside the campus on one episode of One Sports’ Starting Lineup. The opener, she said, will draw inspiration from UST’s other events.
After also opening the UAAP season back in Season 79 inside their campus, Season 88 poses a different type of challenge for UST.
“We really want to do it again sa university because we want to really share all the traditions that we have. It is something that we want them to experience how we make things in the University, like Paskuhan, how we welcome our freshmen. In Season 79, we just did it in front of Plaza Mayor, now it will be in the field,” she said.
Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA) Director Fr. Rodel Cansancio admitted that it was also something practical as the season opening will also coincide with the 2025 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championships.
“The decision is both practical and symbolic. Practical because for the whole of September, yung mga big venues are not available because of the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championships so, the practicality of it, wala na kaming mahanap na venue so we would have it in the campus,” he said.
Because of the timing of the season, the hosting will also present some unique challenges for UST.
But eager to step up to the plate, UST is willing and — more importantly — able to take on the hosting duties and are hopeful for how they will make do with the current calendar.
Apart from the World Championships, the first half of the UAAP season will also be sandwiched with the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand at the tail-end of the year.
But the reigning overall champions are ready to be flexible.
“For UST, it’s a big responsibility. But we are up to the challenge. You know, UST, we never back off from any challenges. Of course, it’s an honor that we are hosting Season 88.” said Cansancio.
“This I can assure to everyone that there is so much to anticipate, and I know the excitement is building up. So we are about to unveil, open Season 88 this coming September.”
