Championship coaches Goldwin Monteverde and Sherwin Meneses headline UAAP mentors to be recognized at the Collegiate Press Corps Awards Night.
UP men’s basketball head coach Goldwin Monteverde and NU women’s volleyball tactician Sherwin Meneses will be among college sports’ best feted at the upcoming Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) Awards Night on June 30.
Monteverde and Meneses will join other UAAP and NCAA counterparts as coaches of the year in the annual awards night, hosted by print and online scribes covering the leagues at Discovery Manila in Ortigas.
Monteverde, for his part, claims his second UAAP Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year Award in the last three editions of the CPC Awards Night. He first won the plum in 2023 for leading the Fighting Maroons to the title in UAAP Season 84.
This year’s citation acknowledges his feat of bringing UP back to the summit after an entertaining three-game series in UAAP Season 87 against the DLSU Green Archers.
Meanwhile, Meneses gets the UAAP Women’s Volleyball Coach of the Year award on his first year as mentor for the NU Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Bulldogs dominated the league to get their third UAAP title in the last four seasons in UAAP Season 87.
They swept the DLSU Lady Spikers in two games in the Finals, ensuring back-to-back championships.
Last year, Meneses’ predecessor Norman Miguel was also feted for the award.
Joining Monteverde and Meneses as awardees are NU women’s basketball head coach Aris Dimaunahan and NU men’s volleyball head coach Dante Alinsunurin.
After relinquishing the title in UAAP Season 86, Dimaunahan restored the Lady Bulldogs to their former glory en route to their eighth title in the last nine UAAP seasons, surviving a mighty challenge from the UST Growling Tigresses in another three-game Finals series.
NU’s Alinsunurin, on the other hand, gets recognized for successfully leading the Bulldogs to a historic five-peat in UAAP men’s volleyball.
Alinsunurin’s Bulldogs bucked a first game loss before conquering the FEU Tamaraws also in three games.
