The FEU Tamaraws took a massive step toward ending over a decade of title drought in the UAAP.

FEU outlasted four-time defending champions NU Bulldogs in a pulsating five-set battle, 22-25, 25-22, 13-25, 25-22, 15-13, in Game 1 of the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball Finals on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The top-seeded Tamaraws showed grit and composure in the face of NU’s championship pedigree, rallying from a 1-2 set deficit and delivering clutch plays down the stretch to inch closer to their 26th UAAP crown—and first since Season 74.

Despite the Bulldogs striking first and dominating the third set, FEU responded with poise, narrowly taking the fourth and sealing the comeback in the decider with big swings and timely defense.

With the win, FEU now holds a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series, needing just one more win to dethrone the league’s reigning dynasty.

Game 2 is set next Wednesday.
