La Salle crashes the boards to fuel big win over UST in UAAP Season 87

The DLSU Green Archers relied heavily on their rebounding to power their win against the UST Growling Tigers, 88-67, in round 1 of the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, September 29.

With Mike Phillips dominating the painted area, the defending champions outrebounded UST, 56-29, with 21 of their boards leading to extra possessions on offense.

After going down by as many as 10 points early, 8-18, La Salle went on a scorching 15-0 run to seize the lead at 23-18. 

The Green Archers never looked back.

Riding big games from both Phillips and reigning MVP Kevin Quiambao, the defending champions led by as many as 24 after an Alex Konov triple with 31.4 ticks left in the game.

Five different La Salle players finished in double-digit scoring, led by Phillips’ double-double effort of 12 points and 18 rebounds. Quiambao chipped in an all-around game of 10 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

La Salle is now 5-1 while the Growling Tigers dropped to 3-2.
