Call it the MGR experiment.
Remember when your uncle played basketball with you when you were still little and he would shoot jumpers with his off-hand while making fun of you?
That might’ve been the same case when swingman Matt Ganuelas-Rosser pulled off a surprise move that had the bench of TNT Tropang Giga going crazy towards the end of their blowout win over the Terrafirma Dyip on Saturday.
With under a minute and a half remaining in the game and TNT up by 16 points, MGR dribbled into a pull-up jumper beside the free throw line using his left hand. What’s the big deal? Well, for starters, MGR is right-handed. Secondly, he isn’t known for hitting perimeter shots. Actually, he takes an outside shot just five times a year, two of those he chucks up during pickup games.
Kidding aside, perhaps MGR wasn’t really trying to show off. Maybe the 6-foot-4 tweener is just trying different stuff to be a more effective shooter.
On a night when TNT super import Jalen Hudson engineered a rare five-point play by hitting an and-one three and a put-back slam after missing the bonus, it was MGR’s lefty jump shot that became the exclamation point in the statement victory.
After their 131-109 domination of Terrafirma, TNT improved their record to 4-1. And with Hudson and MGR getting buckets in all sorts of crazy fashion, they’ll be right up there among the favorites to win the 2023 Governors’ Cup.
