Geo Chiu is the no. 1 pick of the PBA Season 50 Draft, a batch that also featured prominent names like Juan Gomez de Liaño, LJay Gonzales, and Will Gozum.
Geo Chiu surprised some as he emerged as the top overall pick by the Terrafirma Dyip in the PBA Season 50 Draft Sunday, Sept. 7.
Chiu was just as shocked himself.
“Di pa rin ako maka-get over. Mahirap paniwalaan na first ka. But nonetheless very grateful for this,” Chiu told a handful of reporters after taking the stage at the MOA Music Hall.
But fans will have to wait a little longer before seeing him strut his stuff on a PBA floor.
As it turned out, Chiu will have to finish his current season with the Abra Weavers in the MPBL first before joining the Dyip.
Asked if there’s a timetable, the former Ateneo Blue Eagle didn’t have a definitive answer.
“I think mga December po siguro. If ever we reach the Finals, mga December,” he said.
It can be recalled that last year’s top pick, Justine Baltazar, was in the same situation as he needed to fulfill his contract first with Pampanga.
But Chiu plans to practice with the Dyip from time to time in hopes of getting to know the system and his teammates better before he finally debuts for Terrafirma.
“Pinagusapan namin na pag may mga breaks kami, come over and join the team practices para kahit papano makapag get together with the teammates and practice na rin,” he said.
