It's been a rough week for Filipino-British goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

Last Sunday, he reported an incident of racism to the referee at the 91st minute of the FA Cup tie between the Birmingham City Blues and the Blackburn Rovers.

On Wednesday, his saves for the Blues went to naught as they were eliminated in the fourth round with defender Auston Trusty's own goal in extra time at the 100th minute.

"Extremely disappointed with the outcome of yesterday's game. Gutted to be out of the FA Cup!" Etheridge posted on Instagram. However, he still had plenty of reasons to keep his head high.

"I know that one individual does not speak for an entire fanbase or everyone in society. I am proud of what I did to bring to light, once again, an ongoing problem that we all have a responsibility to tackle head on," he added.

"Racism and all forms of discrimination should not be tolerated. We cannot eradicate it overnight, but if we can all keep doing our bit to educate those out there, I hope and pray that my child, and our children, can grow up in a better world."

Birmingham City Football Club has given full support to its goalkeeper, saying in a statement, "There is no room for racism in the game."

The details of the reported racial abuse have not been divulged. But the statement from the Blackburn Rovers called on the community and the club's supporters.

"Blackburn Rovers condemns all forms of discrimination and we will seek the strongest possible sanctions in order to tackle anti-social and/or criminal behavior," Rovers CEO Steve Waggott said. "The mindless minority who choose to disrespect the club and behave in an offensive manner are not welcome at Ewood Park."

"We must also remind supporters that encroachment onto the pitch is a criminal offence, as well as a breach of ground regulations. Individuals identified will be issued with stadium bans and police action may also be taken."

The Lancashire police is now investigating the incident and are appealing for witnesses and mobile phone footage.
